How to Stay Cool with a Broken AC by:

  1. Setting Your Ceiling Fans to Spin Counterclockwise: Generally, most ceiling fans are preprogrammed to push air downwards due to their default clockwise rotation. But when your AC’s out of commission, you should consider reversing the blade’s direction to a counterclockwise setting. This will draw up the cooler air sitting at floor level, and distribute a fresh breeze around the room, making it more bearable in the moment.
  1. Shielding Your Home from the Sun: If you’re one of those people who love letting the sunshine into your home, we don’t blame you! But right now, while your AC is out of order, this may not be the best idea. To keep the stifling heat out, close your blinds, draw your curtains, and make sure you close all your windows as well.
  1. Limiting Exterior Door Use: Try to avoid opening external doors as much as possible. Every time you open these doors, you’re letting in warm air, which can only exacerbate the situation.
  1. Opening Windows at Night: Once the sun goes down, the outdoor temperatures dip, making it the perfect time to open your windows for a cool breeze to permeate your home. Just make sure to close those windows again come morning!
  1. Avoid Using Heat-Generating Appliances: In addition, you should also hold off using any appliances that emit heat. For instance, appliances such as ovens, stoves, dryers, and dishwashers will only crank up the indoor temperature.
  1. Crafting Your Own DIY AC: This last suggestion is a little “creative,” but it can work!
  2. You can be innovative and put together a homemade AC with just ice and an electric fan. Achieve this by placing the ice in a big bowl in front of an electric fan. Once the air from the electric fan passes and blows over the ice, the air will cool down, making for a pretty effective cooling effect if you are sitting in front of this creative setup!

These handy tips should tide you over until your AC is up and running again. At Clayton-Englewood Heating & Cooling, we’re dedicated to delivering superior service, whatever your HVAC needs may be. Don’t hesitate to reach out and let us provide you with our exceptional service.
