Spring is coming in hot right around the corner- March 20th, to be exact. But as residents of Ohio, we still have to stay winter-ready and be prepared for any seasonal mishaps. Although to stay winter-ready, it would be a great idea to have a plan in case your furnace stops working; you don’t want to be blind-sided and unprepared for any unfortunate events. Your Clayton-Englewood Heating & Cooling family has thought ahead for you, and we have come up with the following points to run through should your heat go out this winter.
What to Check for First?
Because your safety is our top priority, we highly recommend immediately ruling out potential gas leaks. If you suspect this may be the culprit to your malfunctioning furnace, please contact your gas company directly. Then, gather everyone in your home (don’t forget any pets) and exit the house until you are informed it is safe to go back inside.
When To Call a Professional?
No one wants to jump the gun when calling a service professional in, so don’t pick up the phone just yet! It is always a good idea to try some basic troubleshooting steps first. Try the steps listed below to see if you can figure out the issue to get your furnace up and running. If you’ve tried the following steps, we recommend scheduling an appointment. You can contact Clayton-Englewood Heating & Cooling, and we will send one of our friendly and knowledgeable NATE-certified technicians to your home.
How To Troubleshoot?
Don’t let it scare you. Troubleshooting can be easy. There are just a few basic things we want to walk you through. Start with checking the pilot light on your furnace. If your furnace is still turning on but not blowing warm air, the pilot might’ve light gone out without you knowing. Next, inspect the circuit breaker. If the switch flipped, the solution might be as simple as flipping it back to on- easy peasy! Last, of all, don’t forget the thermostat. You want to make sure the setting is still on heat mode. If it’s a matter of your thermostat display not showing anything, it may just need a pair of fresh batteries. So try changing them out for some new ones.
How to Stay Warm?
In the meantime, if you are waiting for a technician to arrive, you may need to find a way to stay warm. If you happen to have a fireplace in your home, this would be a great time to utilize it. If you have a wood-burning fireplace, it would be a good idea to keep some logs on standby for situations like this. Perhaps, a fireplace isn’t an option for you? If this is the case, you can exercise your baking skills during this time! You can use the oven for baking a special treat or meal. The warmth from the oven can help provide a bit of extra heat in your home. Keep in mind it is not recommended to use an oven to heat a home. The oven should only be used for its intended purpose and never left powered on and alone.
